Law Firm Schema Markup: The Technical SEO Move Most Attorneys Are Missing
Schema markup is one of the highest-leverage technical SEO moves available to law firms — and one of the most consistently missing. Here's exactly what to imple
Among all technical SEO work law firm websites need, schema markup has the most favorable ratio of implementation effort to ranking impact — and it’s missing from the majority of law firm sites we audit.
Schema markup (structured data) is code added to your website that tells search engines explicitly what your content is about in machine-readable language. Instead of Google inferring your firm is a personal injury law firm in Tampa based on text, schema states it directly in a standardized format Google’s systems can process with certainty.
The payoff is twofold: better semantic understanding of your pages (supporting rankings) and eligibility for rich results in search — enhanced listings showing ratings, hours, FAQ answers, and other details directly in the results page.
The Schema Types Every Law Firm Website Needs
LegalService Schema
LegalService is the primary schema type for practice area pages. It tells Google explicitly what type of legal service is offered, who provides it, and where it’s available. A complete implementation for a Tampa personal injury page includes name, description, URL, telephone, address with geographic coordinates, areaServed listing your cities, and serviceType.
LocalBusiness Schema on the Homepage
Your homepage should implement LocalBusiness schema (Attorney type) to establish your firm’s identity and location for Google’s local knowledge graph. This schema supports both organic rankings and your Google Business Profile signals when data is consistent. Critical fields: name, address (matching your GBP exactly), phone, URL, opening hours, and geo coordinates.
FAQPage Schema
FAQPage schema enables rich results where Q&A pairs from your page appear directly in search results, expanding your SERP presence without requiring additional rankings. For law firm practice area pages with FAQ sections, this schema can double your effective SERP real estate. Questions should target the “People Also Ask” queries that appear for your primary keywords.
Person Schema for Attorney Bio Pages
Person schema on attorney bio pages establishes each attorney’s credentials in machine-readable format, directly supporting Google’s E-E-A-T evaluation. Key fields: name, job title, alumniOf, memberOf (bar associations), knowsAbout (practice areas), and hasCredential (bar admissions). Most law firm websites never implement this.
Article Schema for Blog Content
Article schema on blog posts establishes the author, publication date, and organization. Combined with attorney author bylines and Person schema on bio pages, this creates a connected web of E-E-A-T signals Google’s quality systems can parse explicitly.
How to Implement Schema Markup
The cleanest approach is JSON-LD — a block of schema code added to the page’s HTML head section. For sites on Astro or Next.js, schema can be implemented as a component that accepts page-specific data and renders the correct JSON-LD block consistently across all pages of the same type.
After implementation, validate using Google’s Rich Results Test and the Schema.org Validator. Errors prevent Google from using schema for rich results and can negate the ranking benefit.
Monitoring in Search Console
Once implemented, monitor in Google Search Console under Enhancements. Search Console reports whether Google is successfully parsing your schema, any errors needing correction, and which pages have valid rich result eligibility — part of the monthly SEO audit routine.
Schema markup is one of the technical implementations we include in every law firm website build and audit at Hughey, LLC. The implementation window is short; the ongoing ranking benefit is persistent.
