A law firm website launch is one of the highest-stakes technical events in your marketing calendar. Done correctly, it improves rankings, performance, and conversion simultaneously. Done without the right preparation, it can trigger ranking drops that take 6–12 months to recover from — erasing years of accumulated SEO equity in a single DNS cutover.

This is the 20-item checklist we run on every law firm website build before going live.

Technical SEO (Items 1–7)

1. 301 Redirect Map Complete and Tested. Every URL on the existing site must map to its new equivalent with a 301 redirect. Test every redirect using Screaming Frog before launch.

2. XML Sitemap Generated and Validated. Include all important pages; exclude administrative, thank-you, and login pages. Validate for errors before submission.

3. Robots.txt Reviewed. Confirm the robots.txt isn’t blocking any important pages. A common mistake: staging environment blocks carried over to production.

4. Canonical Tags on Every Page. Every page needs a self-referencing canonical tag pointing to its preferred URL to prevent duplicate content issues.

5. Title Tags and Meta Descriptions Unique on Every Page. Run through Screaming Frog or SEMrush to confirm every page has unique title tag (under 60 chars) and meta description (under 155 chars).

6. Schema Markup Validated. Run all primary page types through Google’s Rich Results Test. See our schema markup guide.

7. Internal Linking Audit Complete. Confirm all internal links point to correct new URLs — not old URLs that would trigger redirects or staging URLs that return 404s.

Performance (Items 8–11)

8. Mobile PageSpeed Score Above 85. Run through Google PageSpeed Insights. Below 85, identify and resolve primary performance issues before going live.

9. Core Web Vitals in Green. LCP under 2.5s, CLS under 0.1, INP under 200ms in the Lighthouse performance report.

10. HTTPS on All Pages, No Mixed Content. Confirm HTTPS is active and no pages load HTTP resources that trigger browser mixed content warnings.

11. 404 Page Configured. Your 404 page should maintain site navigation, include a search function, and link to primary practice area pages.

Conversion (Items 12–14)

12. All Forms Tested End-to-End. Submit a test entry through every form. Confirm it creates a lead record in your CRM, sends a confirmation email, and triggers attorney notification. Do this before launch.

13. Click-to-Call Active on Mobile. Test phone number links on actual mobile devices. Confirm they open the native phone app.

14. Consultation Booking Flow Tested. Test the complete booking sequence including confirmation emails and calendar entries.

Tracking (Items 15–17)

15. GA4 Conversion Events Firing Correctly. Use GA4’s DebugView to confirm form submission events and phone click events are firing correctly. See our GA4 setup guide.

16. CallRail Dynamic Number Insertion Active. Visit from incognito to confirm the CallRail tracking number displays correctly. Test calls for correct attribution.

17. Google Ads Conversion Tracking Verified. Confirm conversion tags are firing and conversions are recording correctly in Google Ads.

Post-Launch (Items 18–20)

18. Google Search Console Property Created and Sitemap Submitted. Submit your XML sitemap. Request indexing for highest-priority pages using the URL Inspection tool.

19. Monitor 404 Errors for 30 Days Post-Launch. Monitor Search Console’s Coverage report weekly for the first month and add redirects for any new 404 errors.

20. Ranking Baseline Captured Pre-Launch. Capture your current rankings for 20–30 most important keywords before DNS cutover. You need this baseline to evaluate whether the new site is performing better or worse post-launch.

This checklist is the pre-launch process we run on every law firm website build at Hughey, LLC.
